Bentley Flying Spur

The Bentley Flying Spur, formerly known as the Continental Flying Spur is the least expensive model currently sold by the luxury carmaker. First introduced back in 2005, the Flying Spur is basically a four-door version of the popular Continental GT. It’s also the oldest new car produced by Bentley and this second-generation model has been around since 2013. The 2019MY Flying Spur still uses the previous-gen Conti’s platform, albeit with some minor alterations. Irrespective of its ‘cheaper’ starting price and lower pecking order within the range, this is still very much a Bentley.

In fact, in the UAE market, there are actually four different variants of the Bentley Flying Spur. There are the standard V8 and W12 models, which are supplemented by the faster and more powerful V8 S and W12 S variants. The Flying Spur’s chief rivals include the BMW 7-Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Jaguar XJ, and Maserati Quattroporte.

Exterior

Compared to the more contemporary designs of its rivals, the Bentley Flying Spur does look like a luxury car from a decade ago. However, it maintains a certain level of grace and an air of richness. The low front end of the Flying Spur looks debonair with its chrome upper grille and barrel-shaped xenon headlights. The smooth hood proudly wears the Bentley emblem, while the bumper sports a large lower grille with intricate mesh pattern and even more chrome. Along the sides, the main design highlights would be the evocative 19-inch alloy wheels, large wheel arches, chic fender vents, and a pronounced rear haunch.

The backend features rectangular LED taillights with embedded elliptical elements, large boot lid with the Bentley logo, a body-width chrome strip, and a taut bumper with well recessed elliptical twin exhausts and rear diffuser. The 2019 Bentley Flying Spur stretches 5.299 meters in length, 1.984 meters in width, and 1.488 meters in height. Meanwhile, the wheelbase measures 3.066 meters and the total boot volume stands at a compact 475 liters.

Bentley Flying Spur Interior

Interior

While it’s expectedly comfortable, roomy and well-appointed, this interior definitely looks dated. That’s not very surprising considering that the Flying Spur is now getting a bit old in the tooth. For the most part, this interior feels quite posh and meticulous in its fit-and-finish. However, the plastic buttons along the center dash, around the gear lever, and on the steering wheel clearly don’t belong in a Bentley. Thankfully, the leather, wood, and metal bits all look and feel really expensive as they should. You can get the Flying Spur as 5- or 4-seat versions, of which, the latter feels more plush and delivers a better luxury experience.

Due to the generous sound insulation that Bentley has used, the cabin remains eerily quiet and far removed from the outside world. Flying Spur owners can enjoy some toys such as automatic cruise control, computer-controlled air suspension, electric sunroof, ambient lighting, four-zone climate control, power-operated rear blinds, dual 10-inch rear entertainment screens, massaging and ventilated seats with memory, rear chiller, and a 1,100-watt premium Naim audio system. Moreover, you also get a barrage of passive and active safety features to keep you safe in case anything untoward happens.

Engine and performance

If you want your Bentley Flying Spur to be luxurious and quick on its feet, look no further than the bonkers W12 S. This beast houses a potent 6.0-liter W12 engine with the added benefit of two turbochargers. The end result is 626 hp and 820 Nm of torque – which catapults this 2.5-tonner to 100 km/h in a mere 4.5 seconds and left uninterrupted, the Flying Spur will soon be clocking 325 km/h! Not too old now, is it?

Bentley Flying Spur

Verdict

The 2019 Bentley Flying Spur range costs from a paltry 830,000, up to a whopping 1.3-million dirhams. As for financing options, that starts from a trifling 12,937 dirhams.
