Mitsubishi Outlander 2019

As we all know by now, the market for crossover SUVs keeps expanding as their demand amongst consumers has never been higher. The trend for high-riding, practical, car-like pseudo SUVs kick started in the early 2000s. Mitsubishi saw the burgeoning demand for such vehicles and promptly launched the Outlander in 2001.

Almost two decades on, the latest third generation 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander is here to do what its forerunners did back then. In Mitsubishi’s family tree, the Outlander sits in between the smaller ASX, and the much larger Montero Sport. Originally facelifted and revised only recently in 2015, the new 2019 Outlander is almost identical to that model. The Outlander’s chief rivals in the region include the GMC Terrain, Ford Escape, Nissan X-Trail, and Toyota RAV4.

Exterior

The front fascia of the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander gets chrome garnishing, sleek LED headlights, chiseled front bumper, wide grille, large air intakes, a faux skid plate, stylish fog light housings, and a long, sculpted hood.

The slightly flared fenders, generous dose of black body cladding, and protruding overhangs front and back of the Outlander’s side profile reflects characteristics of a typical, modern-day urban crossover. At the back, the large rear glass and LED lights aid visibility, while the latter’s striking design looks cool too. There’s also a stylish chrome strip between the taillights and a thick rear bumper with even more plastic cladding.

The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander comes in at 4.695 meters in length, 1.810 meters in width, 1.680 meters in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.670 meters. For the three-row version of the Outlander, if you choose to use all the seats, the usable boot space is limited to 291 liters.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2019 Interior

Interior

The interior of the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander is pretty average in terms of design, though there are some interesting bits in here. The use of faux wood finishes, glossy piano black trim plus the stitching effect on some of the leather looks fine, and the subtle curves, angles, and contours all along the dashboard keep things interesting as well.

The Outlander’s cabin materials feel good to the touch and aren’t very plasticky. The build quality and fit and finish seem robust yet don’t’ come across as bland. Both the five-seat and seven-seat versions have adequate space for first and second row passengers, though the latter’s third row is tight even for average-size adults. Overall practicality and cabin ergonomics are satisfactory, and the Outlander scores well in terms of comfort as well.

Features on-board include leather upholstery, power front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, automatic climate control and headlights, electric sunroof, power tailgate, paddle shifters, keyless entry & go, 18-inch alloys, cruise control, electronic handbrake, a touchscreen navigation and infotainment display, and a premium sound system with 6 speakers. An array of electronic safety nannies plus a full supplement of airbags are standard, along with a misacceleration prevention system and an electronically-controlled 4WD system with a locking differential.

Engine and performance

The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander is available with either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. Depending on the trim/variant, the Outlander can be equipped with FWD only or AWD configurations, and in a five-seat or seven-seat layout. Meanwhile, the four-popper comes with a CVT, whereas the V6 gets a 6-speed automatic.

The AWD Outlander with the V6 can reach a top speed of 205 km/h, hit the ton-mark in 8.7 seconds, and achieve 10.3L/100 km in terms of fuel efficiency.
