Kia Optima 2019

The Kia Optima is a mid-size family sedan and was first unveiled in 2000 and its platform is shared with its Hyundai sibling, the Sonata. First appearing on the scene 18 years ago, the Kia Optima wasn’t the most sophisticated purchase option within its segment. However, since then, things have taken a turn for the better for this Korean sedan.

Now in its latest fourth generation form, the 2019 Kia Optima has transformed into a handsome, safe, and well-equipped offering that is also priced logically. The main contenders for the Optima include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Mazda 6, and Nissan Altima.

Exterior

The exterior design of the new 2019 Kia Optima, though leagues ahead of its predecessors, isn’t going to blow your mind away with exaggerated lines or curves. However, this is undeniably a good looking sedan with neat proportions and big presence. The trim front fascia gets a black honeycomb grille, wrap-around design headlights with LED DRLs, a sloping hood, and a chunky bumper with housing for a couple of air vents plus a large air dam.

The side profile of the Optima isn’t very eye-opening, though the sharp-looking alloy wheels and a sloping, coupe-inspired roofline portray a sense of class and sophistication. At the back, the large taillights feature interesting-looking LED elements that adds some flair, and the bumper-integrated rear diffuser with dual exhaust pipes look sporty. Also, the dual-tone body color with the black roof suits this sedan quite well.

The 2019 Kia Optima bears dimensions of 4.855 meters in length, 1.860 meters in width, 1.465 meters in height, and its wheelbase measures 2.805 meters. The total boot capacity isn’t the best in its segment, but at 436 liters, isn’t too shabby either.

Interior

The cabin of the new 2019 Kia Optima has been revised and now looks more upmarket than before. From the styling of the dashboard to the quality and texture of various trim pieces and surfaces, the Optima’s interior is no longer a sedate, boring place to be in.

Kia has also made relatively-extensive use of soft-touch materials and impressive build quality all add up in the end. The seats too offer good comfort and in-cabin practicality is decent as well. The Optima’s features list include automatic headlights, LED fog lights, panoramic glass roof, 18-inch alloys, keyless-entry & go, cruise control, electronic parking brake, leather seats with power operation, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, parking sensors with camera, and an 8-inch touch-infotainment display with navigation system.

The 2019 Kia Optima’s standard safety kit includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, electronic stability program, traction control, active front headrests, blind-spot warning, lane departure warning, ISOFIX points, and a tire-pressure monitor.

Engine and performance

Under the hood, the 2019 Kia Optima can be equipped with one of three four-cylinder engines. The base unit is a 2.0-liter four-banger that makes 162 HP and 198 Nm, followed by a 2.4-liter that produces 178 HP and 231 Nm of torque. There’s also a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged mill that produces 265 HP and 365 Nm of torque. All Optimas are front-wheel drive and equipped with the same 6-speed automatic gearbox. Depending on the powerplant, the Kia Optima can hit a top speed of around 210 km/h, but also be able to achieve up to 7.6L/100 km.
