Audi RS3 2016 Review

In 2011, Audi unleashed to the world its example of a performance hot hatch. The first generation RS3 produced 335 BHP and based on its success, Audi created the second generation with more power and less weight and termed it as the most powerful hot hatch ever – though that title was later taken over by the A45. So, a lot of hype surrounds this car and thus I had to test it.

Key Features:
Engine 2.5 liter 5-cylinder turbo
Transmission 7 speed automatic
Power 367 BHP / 465 Nm
Top Speed 250 km/h
Price AED 211000

Exterior

side

The new generation RS3 looks pretty much the same as compared to the previous generation. But, that is pretty much the case with all the Audis. But due to changes in details, the new gen looks better and has more road presence. Moreover, the new one weighs 55 kgs less than the old one due to change in platform. So, what do you find in an RS3 exactly that you won’t in a regular A3 hatch? Well, there is the gloss black grille, 19” wheels, spoiler, LED headlights, wider stance and dual exhaust. Overall, the exterior design is lovely and I prefer it over the A45.

Interior & Safety

interior

The interior of A3 is upgraded to suit the RS3 needs. There are sports seats, flat-bottomed alcantara steering and a turbo gauge. Other than that, there is retractable screen, rear cam, climate control, start/stop, powered front seats, airbags etc. The standard kitting will fulfill most consumer demands so no complaints there. Moreover, the cabin space is very much hot hatch like but the sports seats hug you perfectly and you’re well in position to feel the G-Force without going from side-to-side. There are a few plastic bits which Audi could have avoided but overall this is a nice place to be.

Drive

The second gen RS3 is powered by the same 2.5 liter turbocharged engine. However, this time, the engine produces 367 BHP and 465 Nm of torque. This is a LOT of power for a hot hatch. Add to that, the 7 speed DSG and a Quattro system and this little thing flies from 0-100 in less than 5.5 seconds. That turbo-boost feel is nerve tingling and the exhaust note is the best in the hot-hatch market (sorry A45!). However, there is a slight turbo lag when you floor it from idle position. The test car came with adaptive suspension but I prefer keeping it comfort mode with engine setting in dynamic. It is because on the road, the dynamic suspension makes the car a bit firmer than expected. But, the chassis is so well balanced that you can do most of hooligan stuff in comfort mode. The grip is sublime as well. This hot hatch ticks all the right boxes.

Verdict

Audi RS3 can easily be the hot-hatch to buy if you have 200k+ to spend. It beats the A45 in looks, interior and due to less turbo lag, drive as well. Also, that exhaust note is better than any other RS model from Audi.
