Companies are getting charged up at an electrified pace towards the design and development of new platforms and vehicles that are the foremost step in the direction in the pretext of a backdrop with nix carbon footprint and succeed their forebears-ICE vehicles that will be propelled solely via battery power and promise to offer more bang for the buck. There’s mighty progress taking place in the performance car facet too with BMW being the latest player generating gigantic waves.

BMW’s notable M GmbH division, the birthplace of the most riveting BMW performance machines where sorcery is done on the cars to offer their drivers with thrill and frill has begun testing a concept vehicle’s hardware and software solutions which have been curated bespoke for fully-electric high-performance cars. Testing is done with a prime objective to ascertain a four-wheel drive system built ground up for the electric cars that consists of four electric motors, one attached to each wheel channelizing power and is regulated by an integrated driving dynamics control system which supports the car in being dynamic in character, nimble around cambers and precise and lithe, even on ruffled sections of tarmac. This technology will allow BMW to showcase a chunk of its strengths in aggrandizing the hallmarks of the much loved M cars.

Surpassing its 50th year of providing one of the best mobility solutions, BMW is in a ‘work-in-progress’ stage towards fully electric mobility and has already revealed a host of electric cars such as the iLi MS0 manic grunt machine and the quirky but extremely elegant iX M60. Adding to the brand’s portfolio will be the i7 M70, the first all-electric M sedan that will break cover.

The novel M xDrive four-wheel drive system foraying in the test vehicle has the potential to provide varying degrees of power output to all or any of the wheels without getting unfettered and torque which can be strewn in a rapid manner to ford easily through the mud ruts and other barriers such as dunes, streams or through the meadows along the countryside. The system has been designed so accurately that it can easily obliterate conventional four-wheel drive hardware.

For those who gourmand performance of upto apex levels, it is going to be anything but scant and extremely feisty as the car will abet one to floor the pedal to the metal and be catapulted forward as through a reaction involving a catalyst had taken place. This shenanigan is also not plausible in a conventional gasoline powered car.

It’s not an anomaly for SUVs with all-wheel drive to get betrayed by some perfidious and harsh terrains and finding it difficult to scythe the way out. However, this new all-wheel drive system takes care of that by selectively channelling torque to the wheel that requires it the most and doesn’t allow traction to vanish for better control over the car and cohesion with the surface. This is made possible courtesy of a central, extremely integrated control unit that constantly inspects the driving position and the driver’s intentions with legerity.  Power is transmitted with preference to a specific tyre depending on the condition taking several factors into consideration such as accelerator pedal position, steering angle, horizontal and vertical movement, velocity and others. The commands are promptly passed on via a multi-plate clutch and differential to the four motors for rapid and instantaneous response.

This system is not just about manoeuvrability and breath-taking performance, but equitably about making the car frugal and contributing to range as when it senses that the vehicle is simply coasting along, braking or lunging along serpentine roads, the energy released from braking is regulated to charge the car acting as a generator and transplanting the same into the battery when required.

All in all, these new futuristic fully-electric upcoming models from BMW’s extremely reputed M division and the new all-wheel drive framework gives not just passionate BMW purists, but every motor enthusiast the perception that even EVs can be as engaging and soulful to drive as fuel-powered cars, besides being electrifying.
