DHL Express introduces electric car for deliveries in Dubai
DHL Express has added its first-ever electric car in the form of a Volkswagen e-Golf for deliveries in Dubai. To achieve this, the logistics giant has partnered with Al Nabooda Automobiles and taken delivery of its very first Volkswagen e-Golf.
DHL is on a mission to reach its target of zero emissions by the year 2050 and to help achieve this goal, the company has not only introduced the e-Golf, but also an electric cargo bike called the Cubicycle. In all fairness, however, the Volkswagen e-Golf will be able to carry slightly more cargo than the latter. As the name suggests, the Volkswagen e-Golf is a fully-electric version of the regular Golf hatchback. The e-Golf comes with a 35.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 100 kW electric motor. This means that the e-Golf’s electric heart makes about 136 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque, and transfers this to the front wheels via a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
The 1.5-ton Volkswagen e-Golf is capable of hitting a top speed of around 150 km/h, while the sprint from 0-100 km/h takes about 9.6 seconds. The standard e-Golf is capable of covering 300 kilometers on a single charge. However, to make it suitable for delivering cargo, DHL’s version of the e-Golf has been customized and boasts of a segregated cargo bay that’s separate from the driver’s area – a first in the UAE. According to DHL Express, their VW e-Golf will still boast a range of 250 kilometers on a single charge.
Initially, DHL Express will only use their Volkswagen e-Golf to deliver and collect various documents to and from high volume traffic zones in Dubai. These areas include often congested zones in and around Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Downtown Dubai. However, DHL will expand the reach and responsibilities of their Volkswagen e-Golf in coming times throughout the UAE.
