Ferrari GTC4Lusso Review

The Ferrari FF when launched in 2011, was as un-Ferrari as a Ferrari could be. It had four seats, four-wheel drive, and the silhouette of an elongated hatchback. Those who bought into the hype of the FF, complained bitterly of how loud, extreme, and unusable it was, and so, the designers went back and designed a softer, more useable grand tourer. That’s the GTC4Lusso.

Exterior

A mild revision of the FF, the GTC4Lusso resembles the gorgeous F12 Berlinetta from certain angles, and with its broad haunches and wide stance, it’s a good-looking car; a very good-looking car. Despite the dark hues concealing its curves and contours, it turns heads irrespective of its color.

Interior

Being a grand tourer and meant to seat four adults, Ferrari has paid careful attention to the design and quality of the cabin. Inside the GTC4Lusso is soft, stitched leather on the dashboard, door panels, and seats, with real metal on the pedals and titanium on the circular A/C vents.

Much like a Formula1 car and most other Ferraris, there aren’t any stalks around the cabin. All essential functions have been crammed onto the steering wheel. The indicators are controlled from the steering wheel. The headlights, from the steering wheel. Suspension settings, from the steering wheel. Bluetooth telephony, from the steering wheel. Drive modes, from the steering wheel. Wipers, from the steering wheel. And although it should feel like an ergonomic disaster, it just feels so right.

But keeping all of that aside, the truly impressive thing about the GTC4Lusso is the space it offers in the back. Far from utilitarian, there’s ample amounts of headroom and legroom, there’s rear A/C vents, and USB charging ports inside the central arm rest too. In fact, not only does this practical Ferrari offer plenty of passenger room, but cargo room too, with boot space measuring in at 450-liters, which is enough to squeeze in a suitcase or two.

Features

Technology, in terms of entertainment and convenience features, have never been at the top of Ferrari’s priority list. Up until now that is, for in the GTC4Lusso there’s a large 10.3-inch infotainment screen with crisp graphics, Apple Car Play, and plenty more to prove it keeps up with the times.

To keep front-seat passengers entertained, there’s an 8.8-inch touch screen that acts as an extension of the instrument cluster display and allows them to view speed, revs, and gear information, while also giving them access to the satnav and multimedia system.

The most interesting feature, however, is at the back of the car where on a plaque hidden in the boot Ferrari writes down the options fitted on each car. This small detail works as a subtle reminder to owners that they aren’t just driving any Ferrari but THEIR Ferrari, they way they chose to spec it out.

Drive

Despite being a grand tourer and being softer than its predecessor (the FF), the GTC4Lusso is a Ferrari in every way possible. An absolute rocket, it hides a 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine under its elongated hood, which pushes a whopping 680 horsepower and 697 Nm of torque to all four corners. What those numbers translate to are a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.4-seconds, a top speed of 335 km/h, and a melodious exhaust note at any all speeds.

Keeping numbers aside, however, the GTC4Lusso is an experience, an experience that is heightened by a quick-shifting 7-speed dual clutch transmission and Rear Wheel Steering. Turning the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels at low speeds and in the opposite direction at high speeds, it offers better stability and greatly reduces understeer when taking fast bends.

The Manettino switch (which is Italian for little lever) makes subtle adjustments to the suspension, traction, electronic differential, and transmission, depending on which mode is selected: Sport, Comfort, Wet, or Snow. What’s surprising is just how fast it changes personalities, the GTC4Lusso can go from loud and obnoxious to quiet and comfortable in the simple flick of a switch and that’s what a grand tourer should do.

Verdict

The GTC4Lusso is no ordinary grand tourer, it is the Ferrari of grand tourers and at a starting price of AED 1,225,000, it’s expensive but it’s also the embodiment of automotive perfection. A quick note to all other grand tourers then, the benchmark has been raised…
