Bentley Motors and Habtoor Motors officially launched the 2014 Bentley Flying Spur in UAE at  J.W. Marquis Hotel, Dubai. The launch was attended by the media and socialites of Dubai. Soon, the covers were off and the new iteration was unveiled. Sadly we weren’t allowed to drive it just yet, we had to wait for next day to test it out.

The next day, we were invited to the same hotel where we were given a relatively long overview of the car and after sometime we were asked to pair up with fellow journalists and choose one of the many different colored Spurs present in the parking lot. The plan was to drive from the hotel to Hatta Fort, have lunch and then back.

Here's our feedback:

Style

At first glance, there is no significant difference observed in the exterior as compared to the previous versions. The only difference instantly noticeable is the tail. From the side it completely looks like the older Audi A8 with a mix of Maserati Quattroporte which also launched recently in UAE. Like all Bentleys, this model comes with bespoke paintjob as per the customers requirement. However, bespoke paint will obviously take longer to deliver than the available stock colors. Also, Bentley spoils the customer’s choice with an array of alloy options.

Interior

Bentley delivers luxury, no question about it. It is meant for a person who wants no compromise and is ready to pay for whatever he or she wants their car to be. Like the exterior, the interior color is bespoke as per customer’s demand or they can select from the preset colors. It’s a mix of leather and wood everywhere. You know it screams luxury and refinement the moment you sit in the car and look at the plush interior. There is also the Mulliner trim option for those who want to stand out from the rest. You have all the usual suspects, massage seats, seat coolers, hi definition touch screen etc. but we all know that since it's expected from Bentley and anything less just won’t do.

The thing we liked the most was a little gadget for rear seat passengers. This gadget – shaped like a smartphone – is basically a remote control for the different electronics in the car e.g. seats, A/C, touchscreen, clock, rear blinds etc. Moreover, it lets you check vehicle data as well, like current speed, fuel economy, etc. This gets rid of any need for multiple buttons in the back panel and gives great convenience to passengers. Check it out:

Drive Performance

Power

The 6.0 litre W12 engine delivering 616 BHP and 800 Nm torque mated to an 8-speed automatic powers this 3 ton monster. The thing we most liked about the drive was the unlimited torque available at any speed without any delay. You don’t need to floor the gas pedal to get the Spur to go fast. In fact, while we were driving, we did not even push the RPM above 4000 as we were mesmerized by the way it accelerates. We finally got a chance to floor it on one long stretch of road and it instantly brought a smile on our faces.

Handling and Brakes

This seamless power was accompanied by fantastic brakes and suspension. Result? This Spur wants to be driven – especially when the road starts bending. On the Sharjah-Kalba Road, where speed limit is advised to be around 40 kph on the bends, this car was going easily above 100 kph without any hassle. This is amazing, especially if you consider how heavy this car is.

Having Said That...

The only thing we felt could be better was the wind noise. For a car which costs almost a million Dirhams, we were expecting less or no wind noise. Thankfully, the monster engine is very quiet and makes for a relatively quieter cabin experience.

Verdict

The luxury car market in Gulf Region is heating up and Bentley looks to stake it's claim. The New Flying Spur is the latest addition to their fleet and our first impression says it's definitely worth a test drive. It's a joy to drive, the interior is immaculate and deserves an in-depth look.
