Well the Edge was the prime focus of the event. And, we were among the first group of media members in the Middle East to test drive it in the beautiful locales of Jordan.

Exterior

The new Ford Edge looks like more of an evolution to the already popular design. This one feels more round around the edges and gives it a very urban look. It makes sense as the car is meant for the urban youth. The big Ford grille makes its debut in the Edge. Overall, the design works and that’s what matters in the end

Interior

I can say that the materials they used are of good quality. First impression of the Edge is not exactly mind-boggling but it does give you a comfortable feeling. After being inside for a bit longer, you will start liking it even more. The central screen is nice and with lots of features courtesy the new Sync 2. However I felt the radio, with the perfectly round buttons, a bit outdated. I would like to point out that the Panoramic Sunroof virtually covers the entire roof area – opening almost three times the area of the traditional sunroof.

Now, on a special note since this deserves it. Isolation. Yes, isolation – it’s very quiet. And it´s that good for two reasons. Firstly, due to the acoustic glass on the side and front to give a quieter interior. But, the most important player here is Active Noise Control. This all new Edge has three microphones that detect distracting noise from the power train. So, it predicts the noise generated when a vehicle is driven in a particular way and responds to unwanted sounds before they are generated.  A control unit counters undesirable noise by feeding opposing inaudible sound waves through the audio system. So, what happens with the audio system? Well, as per Ford, audio levels remain unaffected.

The new Edge is equipped with 12 airbags and has something called Ford´s inflatable Rear Seatbelts. They need some time in getting used to as they are not the traditional rear seatbelts. Other than that, you will find Collision Warning with Brake Support, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist with parallel and perpendicular parking, forward and side sensing system, curve control, lane keeping aid and trailer sway control. It has been awarded 5 stars by NHTSA.

Drive

There is an intelligent AWD that does the job. You need to be careful if you want to climb big-sized dunes as it will rarely make it. But, if you just want to have some fun in the desert then the Edge will work fine. For big dunes you will need a trining session. The AWD system offers a seamless transition between FWD and AWD to automatically enhance traction. It continually measures road grip and can adjust power to individual wheels in under 20 milliseconds. It gathers data from 25 different sensors including individual wheel speed, accelerator pedal position and steering wheel angle. The steering wheel is now electric as compared to the hydraulic one used previously.

The all-new Edge will feature three engine options, two of which are new power plants – a standard 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. A normally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine will also be offered. All will be equipped with dual exhaust and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Verdict

Overall, the CUV does feel like a whole new model and not only a marketing gimmick. It's the best-selling model for Ford and now comes loaded with more technology, higher levels of craftsmanship and improved vehicle dynamics.
