The EX90 is the electric replacement of the current XC90. While the seven-seater does resemble its petrol-powered sibling from some angles, it’s actually built on a brand new platform and has loads of tech on board.

Eagle-eyes readers would have noticed a bulb above the EX90’s windscreen. That is part of the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system and has a number of sensors, camera, and radars which never “get tired or distracted” and are supported by Volvo’s in-house developed software.

This clever system has a 360-degree view of the car’s surroundings and can spot small objects hundreds of meters ahead of the car and send a warning so the driver has enough time to react. Volvo even says that this system can detect “pedestrians at up to 250-meter distances and something as small and dark as a tire on a black road 120 meters ahead” even when the car’s traveling at highway speeds.

The LiDAR system along with a set of eight cameras, five radars, 16 ultrasonic sensors, makes the EX90 the safest Volvo to date. And it will only get better with more updates coming in the future for the safety systems.

Talking about the drivetrain, the EX90 features a dual-motor electric powertrain with two permanent magnet motors, one for each axle. The most powerful variant of the EX90 will offer 496 horsepower and 910 Newton-meters.

The massive 111-kWh battery pack allows the EX90 to have 300 miles of range on a single charge. Volvo claims that the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes.

Step inside and you will be greeted by a typical Volvo-like cabin. The Swedish car maker claims that the EX90 is “a highly advanced computer on wheels” that is “more responsive and enjoyable” thanks to its collaboration with Snapdragon for the on-screen graphics in the SUV.

The 14.5-inch center screen has built-in Google features, including Google Maps and other apps from Google Play. Standard 5G connection will be available in the SUV.

Talking about entertainment, the EX90 has a Bowers & Wilkins audio system and is the first Volvo to be equipped with headrest-integrated speakers.

Al-Futtaim’s Trading Enterprises, the official representative of Volvo Cars in the UAE, will be bringing the EX90 to the region with the electric SUV launching in 2024 in the UAE.
