Deciphering the meaning of the names of some automakers is quite easy - for example BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Honda etc. However, there are several more whose names aren’t that effortless to understand without some digging; case in point being the Korean auto major Hyundai. So what does Hyundai mean? Well, in a nutshell, Hyundai is Korean for ‘modernity’. Also, the brand name is actually pronounced “Hyun-Day”.

Moving on… The famous ‘H’ logo isn’t just a simple H for the sake of it. It has a deeper meaning, too. For example, the slanted H represents two people shaking hands, with one being the carmaker while the other represents a (satisfied) customer. Meanwhile, the oval that surrounds the two is supposed to be indicative of the Korean marque’s worldwide expansion. Here’s another little insight for you, dear reader. Next time you are out and about, notice how every different Hyundai model uses a distinctly different font for their model names. Quite interesting, isn’t it?

The Hyundai Motor Company, the one that manufactures all the cars that you see on the road, is actually one of the several subsidiaries under a much, much larger umbrella. This umbrella is known as the Hyundai Motor Group. Based in Seoul, South Korea, this Group holds stakes in multiple smaller companies or wholly owns many others. Apart from the production of regular road-going automobiles, the group also has dealings in the world of Finance, Construction, Heavy Machinery and Engineering among others.

Hyundai (Motor Company) first came into being in 1967, and is currently considered as one of the largest and most prolific carmakers in the whole world. Hyundai holds a healthy stake in Kia Motors, and the two OEMs share a healthy and financially productive relationship. Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury wing, produces some of the most sought-after and premium cars -- competing toe-to-toe with the likes of Lexus, Infiniti, Volvo, and even the German trio.

Today, Hyundai has an immense and categorically relevant presence in key markets such as the Middle East. For example, in the United Arab Emirates, the brand has on offer over a dozen models and at different price brackets. With new iterations of their popular models being launched, Hyundai’s foothold in the region has never been more prominent and effective. The line-up kicks off with the new i10 hatchback, with hugely successful models such as the Accent, Elantra and Tucson lending further boost to the brand’s growth.

The launch of the all-new Kona, Santa Fe and Palisade have also made quite the impact within their targeted genres, bringing in a lot more footfalls on the showroom floors across the region. On the other hand, the Genesis marque is undergoing some alterations as well, with their respective models going through their own transformations for the new generation. As of now, Genesis sells the G70, G80 and G90 luxury sedans in the UAE.

If its extensive model line-up and impressive sales numbers aren’t enough, Hyundai’s ever-strengthening reliability ratings by various worldwide agencies (such as Consumer Reports) work wonders in drawing in prospective customers. While there used to be a time not too long ago when the Japanese auto brands were wiping the floor with the then unproven Hyundai, today that’s no longer true. On the contrary, the same reports have revealed that Hyundai (along with its Kia sibling) do exceptionally well on several fronts -- scoring a notch or two higher than their longstanding Japanese rivals.

Along with its stunning growth in the recent times, Hyundai has successfully managed to add a few points to South Korea’s overall GDP growth as well. If this doesn’t impress you enough, I don’t know what will.
