Quick Review

The new 2012 Ford Expedition feels immediately familiar to anyone accustomed to Ford’s line of full-size SUVs, with no major cosmetic or mechanical differences between this year and last year’s model. As a result, it’s beginning to feel a little old-fashioned compared to the new trend for smaller and more nimble SUV crossovers, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The Expedition knows what it wants to be, and that is a truck first, and a car second.

The interior is incredibly roomy, as you would expect given it’s bulk, even when compared to other large SUVs such as the Nissan Armada. All of your passengers will enjoy excellent head and leg room. My only concern is that the finish feels a little cheap in places, with a lot of flimsy plastic on show. The ride is very comfortable, and the handling is surprisingly light for a vehicle it's size.

There is only one drive train option provided: a gutsy 5.4 literV8, generating 300bhp of power and 495 N-m of torque. The lack of other options is a drawback, when compared to the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, which offer multiple engine options, including a modern hybrid electric drive. However, one reason could be that Ford Expedition has a great engine! The torque seems to come from absolutely everywhere, with the Expedition pulling from almost any rpm, in almost any gear. According to Ford’s figures, 85% of the torque is delivered at only 1,500 rpm. This really shows when driving, and makes the Expedition an absolute brute at any sort of hauling task.

Unfortunately, that torque comes at a price. With a thirsty slab of V8 under the hood, the fuel economy is poor, and figures of 8.5 KM/L on the highway and a paltry 5.95 KM/L in the city seem very outdated by today’s standards.

The 2012 Ford Expedition would be an ideal choice for someone who doesn’t want to compromise. It offers something that a lot of manufacturers have consigned to the history books: a beast of a car with a beast of an engine.
