The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer has a stylish exterior look and performs surprisingly well, but with the hard plastics in its interior, it faces stiff competitors in the affordable small car segment -- especially when you factor in fuel economy, compared to some midsize cars. For a similar price range, you could look at 2012 Volkswagen Golf; this offers competitive performance, a lavish interior and good reliability. Another low-priced possibility is the Mazda 3, which has a less inspiring exterior but plenty of features great fuel efficiency and plenty of power.

Overall, the Lancer offers an exciting ride with very good handling and plenty of power. It lacks a little bit in comfort, especially if you're an adult in the rear seats, and road noise is a small drawback. The Mitsubishi Lancer is a car for the budget shopper who enjoys performance over every other characteristic, and is prepared to pay just a little more for it.
