Quick Review

The Nissan Pathfinder is a heavy duty car, so if you’re looking for a car that’s built like a truck, it might be for you. However, be prepared for it to drive like one too.

The 2012 model has a few updates, such as a navigation system as standard. This is a 4x4 of the old school type – rugged and utilitarian. However, the interior is still spacious and comfortable. With a high driving position, you get an excellent view of the road. There’s boot space aplenty, and some models come with the option of an extra row of small seats in the back.

This is an off roader that is built to handle the terrain and because of this, it’s less enjoyable to drive on normal roads than some of its modern competitors. However, the ride is decent, the steering is responsive and it goes well on the motorway. Due to its size though, this isn’t the car you’d want to be driving around the city.

The 4.0L V6 offers decent power and huge towing capabilities. As you’d expect, it doesn't give much in the way of fuel economy, managing 13.1 L / 100Km.

There are more versatile crossovers on the market. The Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango and Ford Explorer all give competitive everyday practicality. If you just need a towing monster, there are also other options – the Jeep Grand Cherokee might be worth a look, and offers better fuel economy.

Overall, the Nissan Pathfinder is more suited to towing the family camping trailer than ferrying them round on a daily basis.
