Quick Review
The Toyota Corolla is an affordable small car. It has a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that provides 134 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission comes as standard and there's an optional four-speed automatic transmission. Available in L, LE and S trims, the Toyota Corolla sees a handful of updates for 2012: the L trim gets remote keyless entry, and power windows and door locks. The LE and S trims get a new standard audio system with Bluetooth and a USB port. The LE and S trims now get steering-wheel mounted audio controls.
Critics find the Toyota Corolla's exterior quite plain and conventional. The seats are fairly comfortable (although taller drivers might find the lack of legroom uncomfortable and the steering wheel awkward). The controls are simple and intuitive, but the Corolla is short on standard tech and the interior materials look and feel cheap. The Corolla is somewhat underpowered and doesn't handle exceptionally well.
Alternatives include the Hyundai Elantra, which has a better-looking exterior, a more powerful engine and a more upscale interior. There's also the Ford Focus, which has nearly four times the cargo space of the Corolla with its back seat folded. The Focus, unlike the Corolla (or Elantra), has a hatchback version.
The Corolla is aimed at shoppers on a budget, trading its limited collection of standard features and unremarkable performance against a lower price.
The Toyota Corolla is a reasonably comfortable but underpowered ride. The handling is satisfactory but its main strength is value for money, low maintenance costs and great resale value.
