Quick Review

Following its introduction in 2004, the BMW X3 has led the field in attractive, sporty, powerful and practical vehicles. The German manufacturer's compact SUV crossover is back for 2012 but, following 2011's major makeover, this year's model is largely unchanged.

In terms of style, the 2012 retains the smoother, rounder looks of the second generation X3. Under the bonnet, the basic option is a 2.0 litre inline 4 which provides 184 horsepower and 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds. The same engine is available in a turbocharged option, which ramps up the horsepower to 306.

There is only an 8-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive option available for the 2012 X3. While the automatic gearbox provides smooth shifts, there is a slight hesitance from stationary and a slight lack of responsiveness. Simply put, without the manual option, the X3 isn't as sporty as it could be.

Inside, the X3 is roomy and practical, with plenty of cargo space. Two trim packages are available, while a range of technological features – such as BMW Mobile Office and backseat iPad holders – make the car a good choice for busy families on the move.

Fans of the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque will find the 2012 BMW X3 an excellent luxury SUV, both in terms of ride and features. The X3 is one of the higher costing vehicles in its range, but you aren't just buying a car – you’re buying a brand.

The BMW X3 may not suit those who put performance at the top of their list, but if you're looking for a thoroughbred brand with excellent maneuverability, good power and family-friendly features, the X3 is a wise choice.
