Quick Review

For driving experience, it’s hard to beat the Mercedes CL-Class. With excellent performance, top quality interior and lots of space, it’s one of the most luxurious grand touring coupes around – if you can afford it.

The 2011 CL-Class had some significant updates, so this year’s model remains unchanged. As a two-door version of the S-Class, the CL shares many of its features with the same unrivaled interior elegance, refinement and equipment but with some exterior redesigns. The AMG models are particularly eye catching. Rear leg room can be slightly limited, but the back remains comfortable – and the boot is huge.

Though this is a heavy car, it handles well and will cope with anything on the road. The ride is smooth, with plenty of grip alongside light and direct steering - though the body can roll in the corners. Overall however, the CL is refined to drive, excelling on long motorway journeys.

Sadly, the engine choices are limited. There’s no diesel option, but the base level twin turbo, 4.6 L V8 has added Blue Efficiency, giving it. 7.2L / 100 Km. The AMG models give ultimate performance, and are mind-bendingly fast. Power is not lacking with the CL-Class.

Depending on your priorities, CL’s rivals might be worth a look as well. The Bentley Continental GT is more expensive than the Mercedes, but offers the same decadence and size with more imposing looks. The Maserati Gran Turismo is more exciting to drive, but doesn’t measure up to the CL-Class’s comfort, size or features.

If you’re in the market for a fast GT car for long, luxury drives, the CL remains an overwhelmingly strong choice.
